No, that doesn't work. But remember that the preferred position for mplayer.sh (I can't recall if it is the default on the installation or whether I put it there) is not "one level higher" but on a different branch, in ~/Library/SlimDevices/bin rather than in the /bin folder inside the preference pane. It is better placed in the SlimDevices folder rather than inside the preference pane as then it doesn't get destroyed if SlimServer is updated.
Myself, I don't think it is a problem to modify the instructions to tell people that they may need to change mplayer.sh to give the full path to mplayer.
