James thanks for the continuing assistance. I can now confess that my most recent problem was entirely user error - while messing around with everything else, I screwed up my password! So it was giving a "FAILED" response.
As I write this, it has now burst into life and is working perfectly through softsqueeze. This doesn't explain the problem I was having at 11.39 today, but if you have a patch coming I'll try that tonight.
