The plugin settings (on server settings->plugins) lets you define the minimum. I've arbitrarily set it to 3/3 for artists/albums and 4 for songs, but you can change that. Yes, it's for performance as searching gets progressively slower the more results are returned.
Additionally, in the development version that I'll post soon, you can press RIGHT during a search and force a search even with a 'short' string. So, you could leave 'songs' set high and just press RIGHT when you've entered enough. I'll have a look at the wording, too. Thanks for all the suggestions. The next screen is artist/album for artist search. Yours puts "Browse ..." on the page after selecting a search result, and just album for the next page on the artist search.
