I was just dabbling blind trying to learn but I added a name to strings.txt then a function to titleformatter.pm and it showed up and worked, I just got stuck trying to get the info I wanted for it :-)
Did you have to patch titleformatter.pm? If you could do the trick without patching anything, this would be excellent. But as long as you'd need to modify stuff from the main code, I still think it's better using a plugin like MusicInfoSCR.
