If there were some tool available that can add a genre to all music files in a directory tree it wouldn't require so much work. But if the available tools just can set a genre on all music files, instead of add a genre, I can see that it would require a lot of work. It might be possible to use the masstagger functionallity in foobar for this. I would feel a little scared when running it though, because if something goes wrong it might result in that you'll have to retag the whole library.
Another solution might be to use some other tag, for example the COMMENT tag which is slimserver stores during tagging. If you are already using the COMMENT tag the problem will be the same, but if not it will be easier to find a tool that can just set all COMMENT tags on a directory tree. A third solution might be to have a solution which is playlist based. You would then just have to setup a playlist with all "Phil's Music" and another playlist with all "Alex's Music". A Custom Browse libraries menu could then be created so it in one sub library just shows tracks that are in "Phil's Music" playlist and in the other sub library tracks that are in "Alex's Music" playlist. It has and will always have limitations due to this, independent of which solution I choose. If slimserver supported multiple music library paths and marked each track from which music library path is was found it would be really easy to use that in plugins such as Custom Browse. I think the multiple music library paths functionallity might not be so hard to implement, the problem is probably to implement all standard browse menus and third party plugins so they work correctly with two libraries. But even though it wasn't supported in the standard slimserver menus a simple path identifier would help a lot if a plugin want to create support for multiple libraries. But I guess you would like to switch library from the remote which makes it a little more compliacted.
