No I didn't try it without but I will as soon as I can.

I run my Slimserver on a Buffalo Linkstation HG300 and because of a
hardware flashing issue, I cannot upgrade to the openlink/freelink
packages. I tried several times to install devel environments on it
without success and I even tried running a cross-compiler environment
on cygwin on my WinXP PC but have never succeeded. I usually end up
deleting everything in utter frustration after days of mucking
around...

I was running V6.2.2 up until this weekend when I decided to try
upgrading to V6.3.1 (knowing there was at least one module missing:
SHA1). Well, to my surprise, everything went smoothly and ran without
any glitches!?!?

I'd love to be able to have a development environment to play around
with and try the V6.5/V7.0 versions of Slimserver but unless I
configure myself and old (well, not so old) X86 PC with some version of
Linux (Ubuntu?), I'm pretty much stuck with running V6.3.x with only a
few plugins to play with (the ones that don't require me to install
additional packages :-/ ).

Daniel
P.S. The problem with the Linkstations is that once you "damage" the
flash eprom, you're stuck with a "brick". Let's just say I know enough
to get in trouble but not enough to get out of it...
