The template based solution implemented in the Custom Browse plugin feels very good (it's not release yet). I think the same solution might be possible to implement in SQLPlayList, this would mean that you could create a number of different types of playlists. Each playlist type you would have an "user friendly" user interface similar to random playlist with the parameters relevant to that playlist type. As long as you use the predefined playlists types you wouldn't even have to see the SQL. With this solution SQLPlayList could also be delivered with a number of builtin playlists which would mean that the random playlists could be available by default. I'm not sure if its possible to understand this without seeing it.
The functionallity is already available in the released version of Custom Browse for creating new menus, in the not yet released version it will also be possible to edit existing menus in the same way. You can create a new menu of type "Filtered Artists" menu for a sample of how the interface look like.
