I saw the "400 Bad Request" error message in my log file when I copied and pasted a new API key in to the plugin configuration page. In my case the problem turned out to be that the copied key had a space at the beginning which needed to be removed. The unwanted space character was present in the copied key whether I used CTRL-C or the copy button next to the key on the Google webpage.
