The idea was a player turned off has no playlist. It's not playing anything, it's off. You cannot look at the playlist from the device itself when it is off. For some reason the web interface does show you the playlist, I agree, but it makes little sense to me, it's just confusing IMHO. Anyway, it's a "limitation" that could be easily removed if you wanted it.
