Interestingly this morning's scan also has reduced the album art lookup times significantly:

My local 'artwork' folder is still empty - so I guess that is a source folder only? The slimserver/Cache/mai_coverart folder is empty also. I do have a fair amount of the 10k albums' artwork tagged or as discrete images, but I know there is a significant number still without. There is a sizeable artwork.db file (550MB).
