Update ... luckily someone has archived a 2012 firmware update (mine came with one from 2011) ... and it seems to have improved things. I think the issue was not holding on to the Wi-fi connection very well. It does it better now (can ping reliably but before there were timeouts). Am now running AirPlay to it to see how well that runs.
