I did see the restart step in the instructions. In fact I've rebooted at least a couple of times (I do not leave the PC on). I wondered about a font cache - I was looking at the file font.pm (I think) for clues, but I don't really read code. Anyway I was also think of renaming the original bmp files to .old and name my created ones the same as the origs. Just as a workaround. But basically I can't get it to work otherwise.
