I had the very same problem.

Slimserver 6.5.0 on FC6 and softsqueeze v2.3 (i think) on XP Pro.

I upgraded java about a month ago and softsqueeze started but no
interaction at all. I upgraded to the latest softsqueeze and all was
well. Didn't have to touch slimserver at all.
