Here's the spec on max power the pi can supply to the drive controller: https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/raspberry-pi.html#maximum-power-output . So, just insure that your drive/controller is less than, say 80% of this. I think your (OP) reference to size is you currently have a 2.5 controller enclosure and you want to use a 3.5?
