First thing to note, it shouldn't store the credentials in the prefs file, although I suspect the code only actively blocks it in being stored if it successfully logs on. I'll check that and fix it. Secondly, not logging in for the first time usually means it can't connect. Which could be as simple as no access to the internet or more complex ssl issues. What errors are in the server.log file?
