By thinking about it, I fear (but can't be sure) that fulltext search is just "single word indexing" so would be somehow similar as the actual scheme (maybe a little more optimized as being native mysql functionality). The writer of this post seems to compare perl code to a fulltext search that is obviously a performance gain.
