I think /usr/local/bin is probably OK as long as it is on the Path. This was an issue before with some version of OSX.
There are many possible reasons for not being able to hear BBC/RealAudio (e.g. using an Apple Airport Extreme router, not using a real SB player) so it is necessary to do a basic test.
