Thanks very much for your response, Greg. It's all working now. I used grep - learnt a new linux command (don't know why I hadn't come across it before it's extremely useful). Found the prefs file. It was in a directory not mentioned on the SlimServerPlugins page. I'm using ClarkConnect on my server - preferences files are located in /var/lib/squeezecenter/prefs/plugin. Hopefully that may help someone who is looking for the file in future.
