It is some of the same, but while brutefir uses FIR filtering, LADSPA seems to have no limitations on what it can be used for. Would preferably not start to create lots of filters and tweak them to get good performance:)
On the other side, Klaus has done a tremendous job on the brutefir drc plugin, so I guess much of the code he has made can be reused(since it's GPL).
