I know its not good to continually post in your own threads, but since I've figured out what was wrong, and in the spirtit of helping those that will come afterwards!
It seems that SC7 doesn't play nice with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0. Upon disabling On-access scan, my CPU utilisation dropped to 1-5%, network ~2.5%, and now everything works fine on my N800 - Now Playing is indeed Now Playing :-) I've not changed my virus software, so it worked fine with version 6.5, but upon the move to SC7 clearly there is some conflict. I guess I can run without On-Access scan, and just rely upon the nightly scan, but maybe I should move to a more SC7 friendly virus package.
