At present the bulk of BBC radio is in RealAudio format especially the
"Listen Again". SqueezeBox cannot play RealAudio natively and so need
a PC to transcode RealAudio into Flac or MP3.

If you listen to live BBC - then all live national radio stations are
available in WMA format and do not need a PC (i.e. use Squeezenetwork).
However R1-R4 in WMA is restricted to UK.

The BBC plans to improve quality and change/add audio formats from
RealAudio & WMA to Flash player and then to AAC. However, at present
Squeezebox requires a PC to play AAC or Flash format and there is no
easy way to play Flash audio on squeezebox wqhere SBC is the
controller.
