I think this problem is now sorted. It appears that entering a DNS Server address I had omitted from the FreeNAS setup has suddenly resolved this issue.
I cannot explain why, but since re-starting the errors have stopped and the system is playing music files (except iTunes). I put a third clean installation on and it all worked fine. I even have AlienBBC feeds working on the squeezebox for the first time ever. It was such a simple omission that caused all the hassle. I really cant explain why those errors were generated.
