Perhaps the french wiki page on 'Sleet/Ice pellets'
(http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grésil) can help ? If you can read the
section title "Forme secondaire" I think it is enlightening on the
difference between ice pellets and hail.

As I understand it (IANAM), hail is usually bigger since it circulates
upwards/downwards a cumulonimbus for a while and grows with each cycle,
until too heavy for the ascending currents. Ice pellets do usually not
recirculate, and are made of frozen rain drops or re-frozen snow
flakes.

In any case: FR for hail is grêle - FR for ice pellets is grésil
