Have you considered squeezeslave?  It's possible to run in the
background/minimized.  It doesn't provide any GUI at all (which may or
may not be what you want).  I run squeezeslave when I'm logged-in to my
windows PC which serves as a "virtual" squeezebox - I then control
either thru web browser, Moose, or Controller.  My configuration is
actually a shortcut in my Startup directory which starts Moose, and has
the "switches" such that Moose fires-up squeezeslave in the background.
