I have an Atom-based server wired to my router, and wake on lan works perfectly. I will say that the server power control plugin is great and really easy to use. Although you might be able to do the same things by configuring XP (I use Ubuntu, so I wouldn't know), the plugin has some nice features (such as being able to shut down or suspend the server from the SC remote). So it might be worth looking at. I found the documentation pretty easy to follow.
