I'm afraid you need to reinstall applets. Applet installer will remember which ones were installed, so you just go to the top menu of applet installer and select install/remove to get them all back.
This was a decision taken to avoid old applets causing a lock up after an upgrade if they turn out to be incompatible with the new version. It could be improved by automatically reinsalling them, but then this could trigger the problem we are trying to avoid.
