I also contacted NPR but got the automated reply. In August when
www.npr.org was revamped, the Windows Media support was supposed to be
dropped because of lack of use. The thin.npr.org site was designed to be
suitable for mobile devices and visually impaired (i.e. user who use
screen magnifiers and screen readers). The thin.npr.org site also
uniquely provides access to program segments in WMA unlike the
www.npr.org which uses Flash/AAC. WMA meant that playlists could be
generated for SB which is why the thin site is important to the plugin.

So when contacting NPR about thin.npr.org - mention in the same
sentence something like "the site for visually impaired" rather than SB
player as the visually impaired will be a minority and hence "lack of
use" (i.e. low user numbers) is to be expected compared to www.npr.org
usage.

At the time of writing of the plugin the main npr.org site only
provided Flash/AAC access and mobile device could not play it so
thin.npr.org was also popular with mobile users as it provided WMA
streams. Also at the time SB could not play Flash/AAC streams. This
restriction wrt Flash/AAC is changing and so NPR may be trying to cut
costs under the "revamp" heading.

SB currently supports pause/stop and FFW/REW when playing BBC podcasts
so the problem is not with SB.
