I made use of the extension downloader page instead of dropping the files in the plugins folder, and restarted the server. My initial attempts didn't work because I mistakenly kept restarting squeezecenter which did nothing. Booting the WHS server did the trick. I think it probably would have worked either way (i.e with or without the use of the extension downloader)
