Squeezebox server looks for plugins in several places. If you look at the information tab in the server settings towards the bottom of the page you can see all the locations it looks for plugins on your particular installation. I expect that a manual installation of SDT 5.8.15 was still lurking in one of those locations. After several iterations of unchecking and restarting the server you likely removed all extra installations of SDT so only 5.9.3 remained.
