I've done a bit more digging and it looks like a known issue (aka bug!) with the HTC music app on Android. I tried my phone with a Windows7/wmp12 renderer and the phone discovered it but couldn't play to it. I have sinse downloaded a third party app to the phone (2Player by Richard Davies - recommended) and it works flawlessly. Using two music apps isn't ideal but it will have to do until HTC fix their bug!
