In SMD, everything relies on the same component: "the SMD Server".
The SMD Server can be launched by different components (SqueezeBox Server, Yggdrasil the Rich RCP Client, etc). It's possible that both Squeezebox server and Rich Client launch different instances of SMD Server with different databases, but it shouldn't. I hope things will be clearer with this explanation.
