Did your wireshark look at the tcp session between server and player when playing a track - what's the content of those packets? Is it random or all repeating values you said before? What cpu is this? What does cat /proc/cpuinfo say? It could be that its another problem with the latest spotify library, in which case you could try manually installing the old version?
