With just a couple of changes. I achieved the following:

* On the settings page, you can put "host:" before the port number at
"Helper App Port".
* If a hostname is filled in, the helper program on that host is
connected.
* I supplied a dummy helper program on the local system to satisfy the
startup/shutdown logic.
* When I try to execute the Self Test it passes all tests except for the
last. This test fails with "Helper app unable to authenticate player
(error: -3)"
