Just for information, section 4.4 in LastFM Terms of reference says:
You will not make more than 5 requests per originating IP address per
second, averaged over a 5 minute period, without prior written consent

Heh... I needed to google this document, as the one I've found was in German and didn't have anything like that in it. I figured out I content myself with the first document which smelled legal, but it was end user terms of use...

However, maybe it's unnecessary to worry about it until they complain. I
know I tried to handle it in Custom Scan plugin which have a LastFM
scanning module that can retrieve artist images, but I didn't really
find a good way to solve it so if you can avoid it it's probably a good
idea. I guess it's scanning that should be most concern but it's
probably mainly an issue for people with a bit larger libraries as you
should be fine if you do less than 1500 requests/5 minutes.

very large library and very fast processing: this includes DB reads/writes, writing to the filesystem, looking things up online, downloading an image and re-scaling it all on your LMS system. I've yet to see one item processed in < 200ms (for this use).
