Compared to the Touch (and Radio) the Transporter/Classic/Receiver have minuscule memory buffers. Therefore the risk of buffer underruns are much higher than on the newer devices. A little network glitch and a high bandwidth stream might suffice to make it re-buffer. Now if you sync two players, the server would proxy the stream to make sure the data reaches the two players at the same time. Therefore synching can improve the situation. The good news for you might be that you can force proxying in the player settings. Give this a try for your transporter: web UI Settings, Player, Audio, MP3 Streaming method or similar (yes, it's misleading). Pick "proxied" instead of "direct".
