Compared to the Touch (and Radio) the Transporter/Classic/Receiver have
minuscule memory buffers. Therefore the risk of buffer underruns are
much higher than on the newer devices. A little network glitch and a
high bandwidth stream might suffice to make it re-buffer. 

Now if you sync two players, the server would proxy the stream to make
sure the data reaches the two players at the same time. Therefore
synching can improve the situation.

The good news for you might be that you can force proxying in the player
settings. Give this a try for your transporter: web UI Settings, Player,
Audio, MP3 Streaming method or similar (yes, it's misleading). Pick
"proxied" instead of "direct".
