Weird, after my commit I even ran the JSR-286 TCK and all passed.
Looking at the code, the only reason for this could be that the "tests" instance variable is null. But this can only happen if the init() method has never been called. I did a quick test and initialized the variable directly in the definition and the NPE disappears, but of course the portlet is not working.
Maybe make sure to do a clean install first and I'll update to your latest changes here and try again too. Ate
