Looking at the org.apache.pluto.driver.PortalDriverServlet I don't see
anything in there to render a single portlet at a time. I imagine it
could be added though.
Yes, it could, but it would requires extensive enhancements to the only basic
features the PortalDriver provides.
Adding that by yourself surely is doable, given enough time, but understand such enhanced features are out-of-scope of the purpose of the Pluto PortalDriver, which primary purpose and scope is to be used as Pluto container *test* driver, not a production quality Portal.

For enhanced features like these (and many, many, more) you'll better look at
other portals like Jetspeed-2.

Jetspeed-2 does provide this feature through a combination of a custom "print"
PortletMode and a custom "solo" WindowState.
See: http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JS2-524

For an example, see the "PickANumber" portlet on the standard Jetspeed
(2.1.3/2.2.0) demo home page.

What im trying to achieve is to open a jsp page of my portlet in a
    new window
and on its own without the theme JSP being called. Reason im trying
    to do
that is because my customized theme JSP contains a global header and
    footer
of my application which is not required to show in the popup window.

    Hope this makes sense.
