The login used by the Pluto binary distribution is the default 'memory relm' built into Tomcat (ver 5.5.9 for both Pluto 1.0.1 and 1.1.0-beta1). Check the Tomcat documentation for other options including JAAS.
You also might want to take a look at http://today.java.net/pub/a/today/2005/02/18/josso.html, which is based on Pluto 1.0.1.
