How do I specify which socket the application connects to?

My /etc/my.cnf:
[client]
port                            = 3306
socket                          = /opt/syslogger/mysql/data/.mysqld.sock

But, executing sfacct with the mysql plugin yields:

$ ./sfacctd -L 10.24.95.19 -l 6343 -c src_mac  -P mysql
INFO ( default/core ): waiting for data on UDP port '6343'
ERROR ( default/mysql ): PRIMARY 'mysql' backend trouble.
ERROR ( default/mysql ): The SQL server says: Can't connect to local
MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
