I would guess it's a Javascript error, that might also be the result of a previous PHP error. You will have to check both PHP error log and JS debug info. Could e.g. be an apostrophe, special character, etc. And I would recommend testing the map file and the config settings also with version 3.1, some potential problems for all sorts of queries have been removed there.
