Armin has solved my problem.  When I was uploading the new version of
p.mapper my editor did not upload any dot files (including the ._startup_
folder!  And when I was looking at the contents of the files I also had dot
files being hidden so I could not see them.  I was working on Mac OS X on my
client and server and the default, as in Unix, is to hide those files and
folders.

My stupid mistake.  Thanks again Armin.
