Thanks Pm and Hans - it worked!
Besides readability, I have two other reasons to define symbols in
config.php:
1) Memorability. (When I'm writing togglelink markup I can also more
easily remember {$Show} and {$Hide} than hex code.)
2) Changeability. (Someday I might want to change the symbol.)
