I am sending this as a reference for other people, in case they encounter the same problem that I had. I run the domain in a virtual host. Since I use .htaccess on a couple of domains, it must be enabled and working. No! Apache has the: AllowOverride disabled for the virtual hosts, unless specifically enabled for that virtual host.
