For an alternative to "traditional" rich text editors, I'd recommend
at least taking a look at wikEd [1], a wikipedia gadget that, among
other things, does syntax highlighting. If I had the time, that's
something I've thought about implementing for PmWiki.

The way I see it, syntax highlighting + GUI-ish table editing +
possibly a live HTML preview would allow for a faster path for
beginners to get comfortable with markup as well as be useful to more
advanced users. Rich text editing does help users at the very
beginning, but I at least really like the way you currently can move
more easily to more advanced markup in PmWiki because all the editing
happens in the same view of the page source, rather than forcing users
at some point to switch editors.
