All the media should have put the cartoon on their websites with whatever
disclaimers they deem relevant.
A web search will eventually get one to the cartoon. I viewed it when this
whole mess began. IMO, it's absolutely ridiculous for anyone to be
firebombing buildings and in general being violent because of a cartoon.
I can understand being upset about the cartoon, and the cartoon does further
the stereotype that all Muslims are violent, a stereotype that is not
accurate nor deserved. However, there is something to be said for having a
thick enough collective skin to endure negative editorial cartoons. I could
see a few "Hotheads" like every society has doing violence over it, but not
the numbers that we've seen.
I wonder how they would like their highest holiday being besmirched and
ridiculed and their women depicted as old hags with green skin and huge
moles on the nose? Or have the conception of their religion being one of
wiggling one's nose and causing great, disruptive change in someone else's
life? Or of being, by very definition, evil? Pagan/Wiccans deal with this
and much more all the time. Jews, African-Americans, Native Americans,
Mexicans, women, potheads and pretty much anyone else considered inferior by
the WASPS have endured less-than-flattering editorial depictions.
Now...why would a group of people, inspite of the insensitivity of the
original cartoon, become so violent? I don't think it's because of a
cartoon. I think that, justified or not, the collective Arab anger is
growing to the point that they will cease thinking and do something really
stupid to innocent people. The U.S. certainly isn't going to do anything to
understand or diffuse the anger. I don't believe Israel will either, nor
Britain nor Australia nor other American-alliliated nations. Yet, if we want
to understand why some Arabs are so violent, we have to understand why they
are so angry.
There's not mass revolution until there's mass anger. I think this situation
is about to get out of hand.
Skywolf.
