It's encouraging to see someone on the Left arguing against the notion
that Israel (or the Zionists or the Jewish neo-Cons or simply the Jews)
was behind the American invasion of Iraq.
However, that Zunes thought it necessary to make such an argument suggests
how widespread anti-Jewish conspiratorial thinking is in the Left. The
reader feedback to his article provides a good illustration of the sort of
thinking Zunes is up against. Even though Zunes says nothing good at all
good about Israel, only that in this one case of the war against Iraq,
Israel wasn't to blame and that blaming Jews for the war is incorrect, the
reaction of many readers is not only negative, with comments seeming to
run about 10 to 1 against Zunes' position, but often abusive.
I admire him for trying, but clearly Zunes is battling the tide.
Much of the Left regards America/Israel as an undifferentiated evil. There
is nuance of course. Some think America leads; others think Israel wags
the American dog. Some are clearly antisemites; others have not slid so
far. But in regard to international politics, the stance of much of the
Left is simple bigotry. And because Israel is Jewish, the reactionary
left's bigotry against America/Israel tends toward bigotry against Jews.
