Don't appease Muslim radicals by not publishing cartoons
I am not buying your executive editor's stated reason for not publishing
the cartoons that offended Muslims ("Caricatures and conflict: Freedom of
press, deadly protests," Feb. 11).
I think the reason was primarily one of fear.
There is overwhelming evidence that this fear is justified as a
physiological reaction because of the well-documented murders committed
when someone offends Muslim sensibilities.
The decision not to print the cartoons in The Clarion-Ledger, cannot,
however, be justified on moral grounds.
Anyone with an open mind who wishes to criticize the Danish cartoonists
and the newspaper for publishing the cartoons should first do a little
research on radical Islam in Denmark.
The Danes, a basically tolerant, well-intended people, have naively taken
in a dangerous minority whose intent it is to change Western civilization
to their satisfaction through violence if necessary. If your executive
editor understands that, he should not participate in or advocate
appeasement in any form.
The reason for the cartoons was for that particular newspaper to
demonstrate some courage in the face of the widespread fear of fanatics.
If it were not for the growing tendency for Muslim extremists to murder
those with whom they disagree, it would not be necessary to demonstrate
defiance as in the case of the Danish newspaper which published the
cartoons.
