As a "doctor" I can tell you that animal experiments are essential. I don't
do them anymore, but my work with developmentally disabled children is
informed by them. Treatments derived from the medical and behavioral
sciences are derived from basic research with animals. If anything, too few
animal experiments are done before drugs are approved for use with humans. I
have personal experience with this all too true fact. Only a person without
any understanding of how biological science (and behavioral science) works
would suggest that corporations are "behind" animal research. We perform and
study animal research because life and its processes are still not fully
understood, and we like to have a pretty good idea of how things are going
to work before we start testing our ideas on humans, even
anti-vivisectionists.
