Hello Warren:
Religion is actually a survival instinct; at least that seems to be the
prevailing view - and one I agree with, in that when those neurons began
firing in our primate ancestors (or earlier than that) it would in the
simplest terms drive thinking people crazy not to believe in an afterlife
when this LIFE sucks and the idea of religion; that is, "purpose" and
"promise" stuck. Only when reason replaces ideas of self-importance does
deduction turn in another direction and new reality; considering the true
importance of (selfishness of) organisms in Darwin's view and Dawkins (in
selfishness of the gene with free will) which is just another way of
saying adaptation is for the purpose of survival and is otherwise
"purposeless" -- AS IT IS _purposeful_ to replicate and that is after all
basicly evolution - and basicly, that is all there is.
And it is likely we are the only mammals that have some sense of their own
existence with a past and a future and that we alone think about death.
And, what-if we are a dimension of reality we can't even imagine yet (more
complicated than quantum physics and string theory) and what to us seems
normal is so small it is really part of a much larger system/totality? I
don't suggest this as a religious theory but as a scientific one.
Hank
