The immigration issue has pluses and minuses, a definite two-edged sword.
Being part Indian (Shawano, or Shawnee as nearly as I can determine), I sure
wish we had some strict immigration controls in 1492. Millions of Native
lives would have been saved if there had been. The history of progress in
White America would have been drastically different had it not been for
European, African and Asian immigrants coming here to start new lives.
Current day immigrants are doing jobs that we don't want, taking pay
oftentimes far below living wages. Those jobs, like the traditional farm
work, maids, janitors, hod carriers, etc. that keep the costs of goods and
services within reach of those of us who aren't making much of a living. If
farmers, hotels, etc. had to pay even minimum wage, the price of food, for
example, would skyrocket causing us much more economic strife than we have
now.
And what happens when an employer offers $2/hr for labor then doesn't pay
up? What are the worker's going to do? They certainly can't go to the Labor
dept. with a complaint. What happens when they can't buy food or pay rent?
If my kid is going hungry, and I have no other recourse, I'll go rob someone
to feed my child, wouldn't you?
And it's flat out immoral from anyone's religious point of view to deny
basic human needs to people just because of their arbitrary legal status. To
deny medical help, housing, food, etc. to illegal immigrants is just plain
wrong. Period.
On the other hand, the folks crossing the border illegally should stay in
their own countries and change their own governments to the point they can
accommodate their own. America's resources are low. We're not the "Streets
paved with gold" nation that too many foreign nationals believe we are. The
presence of so many Mexican, Central and South American's coming into our
country are strapping public services to the point that many American
citizens can't access those services. Reportedly, it's also making it
difficult for people from other countries to come into this country and
improve their lives.
I'm torn on another sub-issue as well: Immigrants who don't speak
American/English aren't bothering to learn the language. Yet, Americans who
emmigrate to non-Anglo-American speaking countries are usually expected to
learn their new country's language. Personally, I've always wanted to learn
Spanish. But why should I have to learn their language to be able to
communicate with them in this country? The least they could do is learn the
language, customs and history of this nation. But it certainly wouldn't hurt
Americans to know other languages and customs from an intellectual point of
view.
In the matter of national security, there is a danger from unregulated
border crossings. How do we control such large borders, though? Build walls
that completely seal off the borders? What do we do when, some dark and
stormy night someone who wants into this country slaps a handful of
plastique on the wall and blows a big hole in it? What if they do that in
several places? The point is that if someone wants in, they'll get through
if they have to scuba dive under Lake Superior or parachute from an airplane
over a desert?
With our current political and economic situation quickly deteriorating, I'm
not sure why they want to come into this country, but obviously they are. We
certainly can't trust some asshole like Bill Frist to come up with a viable,
humane answer. It's a sticky question, any way one looks at it.

Does it seem to anyone else, as much as it does to me, that George W.
Bush's world is quickly unravelling, given the division in his own party
over immigration and the Iraqi puppet government's fervent opposition today
to still another mistake - among many?
Your views on the immigration legislation fiasco, security at the borders,
ports and George's involvement (and the surprise that even Clinton is
involved in offshore Arab investments through Dubai? What do you have to say
about any of this?
